Portimonense SC are a Portuguese top flight team from the coastal town of Portimão in the south eastern region of the Algarve. They have historically been a regular presence in the top most league, but the 1990s saw them hit a run of bad fortune that pitched them back down into the second division - once for a couple of seasons even briefly dropping down to the third. But the 2009/10 season was kind to them, and they finally battled back to the top table for the first time in 20 years after finishing runners up in the second division.
Formed in 1914, they play at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão, which can holda somewhat squeezy 9544 - which is likely to get even cosier when the big boys of Portuguese football come and visit them in the coming season. Their best ever season saw them finish fifth in 1985 - an achievement that led to their one and only appearance in Europe. Their UEFA Cup history began with an encouraging 1-0 home win with fellow stripes Partizan Belgrade, but ended with a 4-0 away drubbing a couple of weeks later.
Ex-players include the former national stars Nuno Valente, Rui Águas and Vítor Damas, as well as Edmilson of Brazil (not that one), Jan Sørensen of Denmark, Mozambique's Chiquinho Conde and Moroccan keeper Khalid Fouhami.
